The Viramahesvara sect or now known as Vira Saiva cult which propagated by Basava in Kannada area in the middle of 12th century. The statement that the agamas came from north is totally incorrect. The statement from great scholar like Ramana Sastri are not historically accurate. The Vira agama and Vathula agama are the principal texts for Viramahesvara sect.” Evidently, the Thirumantiram text had been interfered with and the original name of some agama had been substituted by Yamala. Of the nine agamas only eight are said to be principal agamas while the nineth Yamala is not a Saiva agama but Saktha tantra. Thirumoolar wrote his Thirumantiram purporting to give in its nine tantras, the substance of the nine agamas. This was a few thousand years before the ardent of four Saiva acharyas like Thirunganasambanthar and Thirunavukkarasar. “When agamas came south from the north, they appeared as the Viramahesvara Darshana in West India and as Saiva Darshana in South India. Ramana Sastri in his Tirumantiram 1911 edition says The Sankara Samhita of Skanda Purana says “ The Vedas are in the middle of the mouth of Siva, the aksharas (letters) are in teeth and the Agamas are in the tongue” Saiva Siddhanta is the essence of the 28 Agamas. Siva the supreme is said to have revealed the Vedas and Agamas to enlightened souls. Saivism is the pre-historic religion of India. It is hard to make any generalized statement but on superficial look in the immediate pre Islamic past many of the Hindu dynasties in India like Cholas, Chaulukyas of western India, Paramaras in central India, Sena rulers of Bengal, Kashmir etc had primary leaning towards Shaivism even though they did patronize other sects. It is possible that rich patronage to Shaivism by Chola rulers overshadowed the Vaishnaivsm in south. However that seems to be the case for most of the India for that particular time period. Rameshwaram in a way is also associated with Rama’s life. And even today there are great and magnificent Vaishnava temples like Sri Rangam and Triupati in south. In addition to the Alwar tradition, Bhagavat Purana is also supposed to have been composed in Tamilnadu according to the popular consensus. I don’t Think Vaishnavism in Tamil nadu was any less prevalent in south. Vallabhacharya who founded the Pushti marg was also patronized by him if I am not mistaken. Rulers of Vijayanagara richly endowed Vaishnavism especially the rulers like Krishna deva Raya whose own coronation took place on Krishna Janmashtami and who gave patronage to many temple like Tirupati during his own reign. Hence i find ur Question so biased and filled with all negativity and intent to establish some kind of supremacy to compensate something! There were people either followed Shaivism or Vaishnavism There is No Hinduism to begin with in the Common Era(CE) or Before that period(BCE).
